Did You Wake Up Like That or Do You Actually Know How to Wear Sunscreen?
July 19, 2024
The summertime heat is no joke, and, if you’re anything like me, you want to spend your days soaking up the sunshine. As tempting as it can be to skip out on sunscreen in an attempt to achieve the ultimate tan, it’s important that you take the correct measures to protect your skin.
When choosing the right sunblock to use, you should be aware of its ingredients. Many sunscreens contain harmful chemicals that are bad for your skin. To avoid exposing your skin to unnecessary harmful elements, you should use non-toxic mineral based products.
Chemical Sunscreen
The Cleveland Clinic says that generic chemical sunscreen typically contains ingredients like Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, and Octocrylene. These toxic chemicals absorb into your skin and can disrupt your skin barrier causing poor reactions, interrupt your hormones, and cause skin discoloration.
It’s also important to note that this type of sunscreen, although convenient, can take about 20 minutes to fully absorb into your skin and take effect.
This is likely the type of sunscreen that you grew up wearing. Brands like Banana Boat, Neutrogena, and Sun Bum all carry products that include harmful chemicals.
Non-toxic Mineral Sunscreen
Non-toxic sunscreen, on the other hand, essentially sits on top of your skin and reflects away the UV rays from the sun. It typically contains minerals like Zinc-oxide rather than the harmful chemicals found in most sunscreens.
You can find a guide to choosing the right sunblock from the Environmental working group (EWG) as well as their professional recommendations for the best options on the market.
Internet Buzz
The topic of toxic and non-toxic sunscreen has taken to the internet as people are becoming increasingly more aware of the effects of these products.
